Karts are little vehicles that have similar experience with normal cars. Some are racing karts whereas other are designed for off-road purposes. These karts have different performance and their top speed varies based on the engine size.

How fast does a go kart go? This is a question that has many answers. The top speeds of a go kart depend on the size and engine power. Smaller go-karts may only be capable of going 25 miles per hour, whereas a racing go-kart can reach up to 140 miles per hour.

Therefore, it is important to know how fast your go kart can travel before you hit the track. In this article, we will explore the different speeds of a go kart and how they are determined.

How Fast Does A Go-Kart Go

This is not an easy answer since there are so many different types of karting. Each type comes with its own answer. Yet, it is also determined by additional parameters such as track size, engine size, tires, and so on.

In general and on small indoor tracks, oval dirt racing can reach speeds of 30 to 40 mph. The Unlimited Divisions have documented intermediate track speeds of 40–60 mph and bigger track speeds of 70–80 mph.

Why Do Go-Karts Feel Much Faster Than They Actually Are?

When you race with a go-kart you feel that it goes much faster than it really goes. This happens for two reasons.

The first is that there is little to no environmental protection. On a motorcycle, you can have the same feeling since going fast while feeling vulnerable can really put the adrenal glands into high gear.

The second reason is that you are literally an inch or so off the ground. This always creates the impression of going much faster, or it could be a revelation of how fast you’re really driving.

Just to remind you that go-karts can go quite fast. Where I go for racing, sprint karts can touch 70 mph near the end of the front straight, and shifters are known to hit 90 mph!

Karting comes with a lot of fun. Some claim that there are many that want to make go-karting illegal in some states. So get out there now before it’s too late.

How Can You Do Faster Go-Karting

On any track and in any kart, there are a few basic principles that everyone can apply; they assume you are familiar with “the racing line”;

  • Don’t let your instincts rule you. You’ll lean into corners instinctively. The kart will slip if you do this. Instead, use your weight to gain a better grip. As you approach a corner, sit perfectly still and allow the G-force to shift your weight to the outer wheel. Consequently, the outside wheel will dig into the tarmac and provide more traction, resulting in higher cornering speeds.
  • When you come out of slow turns, take your weight off the kart to allow the engine to rev faster. You can do this by leaping into the seat.
  • When possible, tuck your chin into the steering wheel while on the straights. By sitting straight, air resistance won’t strike your chest and you’ll be more aerodynamic.
  • As you round the turn, keep your speed up. It will increase your mechanical grip and allow you to overtake faster at the end of the straight.
  • On the approach to the bend, do all your braking and turning (the majority can be done on the brakes). The beginning of the turn is also the beginning of the straight, so you should be speeding through it.

I could go on, and I’m sure there are plenty more tricks, tips, and tactics out there. Nonetheless, when racing with friends who lacked experience, the five points above always shortened the learning curve and made the biggest impact on their pace.

Is Go-Karting Dangerous?

Many people ask if karting is dangerous. I would say, comparing to what? Crossing the street can be dangerous. A well-run karting event will have air fences and hay bales to protect those who go off road.

Also most races have an ambulance on site, and you are not allowed to participate if you do not have the right safety gear on. Any person who drives like a jerk will rapidly get yankee off the track.

Sure, there will be a few mishaps, but usually it’s your wallet that will suffer, not you.

You are insane if you think going 110 mph without seatbelts and a roll bar isn’t dangerous. Rollovers at such speeds are really dangerous for drivers. If you’re just going karting for fun, which is much slower and not so aggressive, you should be fine.

Going karting doesn’t guarantee you won’t get hurt. The possibility of serious injury exists, but even with their amazing speed, karts can barely do more than spin. I believe that karting is less hazardous than riding a bicycle on a public road.

Are Go-Karts Safe For Kids

The risks are the same as any other sport (maybe a bit more serious). However, you can reduce them if you get the right gear and a little more, such as back support and rib braces.

It’s inevitable that brakes will fail from time to time, so be prepared. Karting is a safe bet no matter if that’s your goal or if you’re just doing it for fun. Formula One drivers all began their careers in karting.

Karts often end up upside down with their drivers inside. Due to the weight being on the driver’s head, this is the most dangerous condition, and it almost always results in injury. Despite having a low center of gravity, this usually happens when one kart is locked with the tyres of another.

Therefore, amateur karting, such as electric indoor karting, has to be far safer than professional racing. These little vehicles come with built-in safety features and they are running at a lower speed.

Final Thoughts

Go-karts can travel at different speeds, depending on the size and power of the engine. Smaller go-karts may only be capable of going 25 miles per hour, whereas a racing go-kart can reach up to 140 miles per hour.

Before you hit the track, it is important to know how fast your go kart can travel. When racing with friends who lack experience, use the five tips above to shorten the learning curve and make you faster on the track.

Despite their amazing speed, karts can barely do more than spin. Generally speaking, karting is a sport that children can participate in safely with proper gear.
